Chapter 8

Balor

The waves lapped at my legs, and the sun shone brightly in the sky. People played on the beach, joking and laughing. A dog was running in the distance. Kids jumped into the water, some crying for help, their parents rushing quickly after realizing that they couldn't swim.

Learning to swim was one of the reasons why Lyndon had come here with me. He took controlled, weighted steps in my direction to ensure he wouldn't drown.

His face displayed his fear. After nearly drowning that one time, he didn't want to repeat the same mistake, something I could relate to. With each step he took, he moved closer to me, and soon he would be in my arms. After that, he wouldn't have to worry about drowning anymore.

"You sure about this?" He asked, taking another tentative step toward me.

Smiling, I replied, "Yeah, I'm sure. Why wouldn't I be?"

He took another step and quipped, "If I drown, I'm going to kill you."

I chuckled. "I'm sure you would."

He shot me a 'you're pushing your luck too much with me' look, but I knew he was just joking, and we didn't take it seriously.

He took another step, almost losing his balance. I even got scared that he might fall into the water. If that had happened, I would have had to jump in for his rescue. Fortunately, that didn't occur.

"You're almost making me regret this," he said, sounding bitter.

"No, you're nowhere close to feeling that way." After a pause, I added, "And look! You're almost here, anyway."

"Yeah, yeah," he grumbled, taking another tentative step toward me and stopping. Then, he suddenly exclaimed, "I feel something moving around my legs, and it's really scary."

"Huh?" I asked, scanning the crystal-clear waters but finding nothing. Either he was pulling my leg or there really was something moving around his legs and it was almost fully transparent. Whatever the case, my eyes were focused on what was happening around his legs, ready to jump in if needed.

"I'm very sure there isn't anything of the sort happening," I reassured him, and he gave me a death glare.

"No, there really is something moving around my legs. I'm not joking. My entire body is trembling, and I can't even move forward, not even slightly, because of how scared I am."

I narrowed my eyes, trying to see if there really was something moving around his legs, but I couldn't see anything. I was growing more certain that he was pulling my leg.

Suddenly, he lunged at me, catching me off guard and making me fall into the water.

Lyndon burst into laughter, and I realized what was happening. The whole thing about something moving around his legs was nothing more than a prank, and he used it to his advantage to make me fall into the water with him.

It was surprising and funny at the same time. Surprising because I didn't think he would subject himself to falling into the water, especially after what happened that one time. I pulled him up with me, and he was still laughing.
